What is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to enhance or restore the size and shape of a woman's breasts, typically using implants filled with saline or silicone gel. The surgery is performed under anesthesia and can involve different incision techniques, depending on the desired outcome by the patient and Dr. Henry's recommendation. The procedure usually lasts about one to two hours, during which the implants are placed either under the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle, allowing for a more natural look and feel.

What to Consider

When considering breast implants, there are several important factors to take into account. Dr Henry always spends ample time with each patient ensuring they understand each decision and how it will affect their results. You and Dr. Henry will go over:

  • Size of Implant

  • Type of Implant

  • Placement of the Implant above or below the muscle

  • Incision site for Implant

  • Implant vs. Fat Transfer

Good Candidates

Implant Size

  • Sizes can range from small (around 200cc) to large (over 800cc), allowing for personalized enhancement based on individual body proportions and desired aesthetics.

  • Factors such as the patient's height, weight, existing breast tissue, and lifestyle should be taken into account when selecting the appropriate size to ensure a balanced and natural appearance.

  • Ultimately, the goal is to achieve a look that aligns with the patient's expectations while maintaining both comfort and functionality.

Implant Placement

  • Above the Muscle: When implants are placed above the muscle (subglandular placement), they are positioned directly beneath the breast tissue and above the pectoral muscle. This approach can provide a more rounded appearance and may result in less post-operative discomfort and shorter recovery time. However, it may also carry a higher risk of visible rippling and less natural movement.

  • Below the Muscle: Placing implants below the pectoral muscle (submuscular placement) involves positioning the implants underneath the muscle, which can provide a more natural look and feel, especially in women with less breast tissue. This method typically reduces the risk of visible rippling and may provide better coverage of the implant edges. However, the recovery may be longer and involve more discomfort initially due to muscle manipulation during surgery.

Choice of Incisions

Implants vs. Fat Transfer

Deciding between fat transfer to the breasts and breast implants involves several considerations, including personal goals, body type, and desired outcomes. Fat transfer utilizes liposuction to harvest fat from other areas of the body, which is then injected into the breasts. This method can provide a more natural feel and appearance, with minimal scarring, but typically offers less volume increase compared to implants. On the other hand, breast implants can provide more significant enhancement and are available in various sizes and shapes, allowing for a more customizable result. However, implants may come with a longer recovery time and potential for complications, such as capsular contracture.

Recovery and Expectations Following Surgery

  • Dr. Henry will be available every step of the way on each patient's surgical journey to ensure proper healing and provide support.  Typically, patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the initial days post-surgery.

  • Dr. Henry recommends taking at least 1 week off work, longer for more physically demanding jobs.  Light workouts can usually be resumed after 1-2 weeks, but more strenuous exercise should be avoided for about 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Patients are encouraged to wear a supportive bra and avoid lifting heavy objects during the early recovery phase to ensure optimal healing and results.

  • Dr Henry will give the patient breast exercises to perform multiple times per day to ensure best results. Patient's can expect their breasts to ride high on their chest initially, but they will drop into a more natural position after 4-6 weeks, and will take around 2-3 months for final results.

  • Dr Henry likes frequent follow-up appointments to monitor healing and address any concerns.
