What is Fat Transfer to the Breast?

Fat transfer to the breast, also known as autologous fat grafting, is a cosmetic procedure that involves harvesting fat from another area of the body through liposuction, and then injecting it into the breast tissue to enhance volume and shape. This technique can provide a more natural look compared to implants, as it uses the patient's own fat. The procedure typically requires careful planning to ensure an adequate amount of fat is harvested and successfully integrated into the breast tissue. The results can be subtle and natural and perfect when a patient wants to avoid implants.

Implants vs. Fat Transfer

When comparing breast implants to fat transfer, the main differences lie in the materials used and the outcomes achieved. Breast implants offer a more significant increase in volume and can come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, providing patients with a wide range of options for enhancement. In contrast, fat transfer uses the patient's own adipose tissue, resulting in a more natural feel and appearance, but typically provides a subtler increase in breast size. While implants have a longer-lasting effect and can be adjusted if needed, fat transfer may require multiple sessions for optimal results and can have some fat resorption over time. Dr. Henry and the patient will decide upon a plan together that depends on individual goals, body type, and personal preferences of the patient

In this educational, yet funny video, Dr. Henry further expands on the topic of implants vs. fat transfer to the breast.

Recovery and Expectations Following Surgery

  • Dr. Henry will be available every step of the way on each patient's surgical journey to ensure proper healing and to provide support.

  • Recovery after fat transfer to the breast generally involves a few weeks of healing, during which patients may experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness in both the breast and donor areas.

  • Patients are advised to wear a supportive bra to minimize discomfort and support the newly contoured area.

  • Light activities can typically be resumed within a few days, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks to ensure proper healing.

  • Sleeping on the breasts during the first few weeks should be avoided to increase fat uptake into the breasts.

  • multiple sessions may be needed to achieve the desired outcome, and some of the transferred fat may be reabsorbed by the body over time. It takes up to 3-6 months for the breasts to "fluff" and show the final result.
