What is Post Massive Weight Loss Surgery?

Post massive weight loss surgery refers to a range of cosmetic surgical procedures aimed at removing excess skin and fat that often remain after significant weight loss. Individuals who have lost a substantial amount of weight, whether through bariatric surgery, GLP-1 agonists, or lifestyle changes, may experience loose, sagging skin, which can affect both their comfort and self-esteem. Common procedures include body lifts, tummy tucks, breast lifts, face lifts, arm lifts, and thigh lifts, all designed to improve body contour and achieve a more toned appearance. These surgeries not only enhance aesthetics but can also improve mobility and reduce skin irritation associated with excess skin.

The Lipo-Tummy Tuck Spectrum

  • Dr. Henry created the Lipo-Tummy Tuck Spectrum to help patients understand what type of procedure would most benefit them based on their body type and aesthetic goals.

  • The spectrum ranges from liposuction alone for excess fat with minimal loose skin, to a complete body lift with circumferential skin resection for severe skin laxity

  • This video gives a complete break down of the spectrum to help educate our patients â€‹

Recovery and Expectations Following Surgery

  • Dr. Henry will be available every step of the way to ensure proper healing and to provide support.  Typically, patients can expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort during the first few weeks post-surgery.

  • Dr. Henry recommends taking at least 2-3 weeks off work, longer for more physically demanding jobs.  Light workouts can usually be resumed after 3 weeks, but more strenuous exercise should be avoided for about 6-8 weeks.

  • Maintaining good nutrition and high protein post-op is especially important for patient post-bariatric surgery or those on weight loss medications

  • Patients are encouraged to wear a compression garment for 3 weeks full time followed by an additional 3 weeks part time for best results

  • Patients will have 1-2 bulb drains following surgery which are easily removed in office after approximately 1-2 weeks

  • Patient's can expect incisions to heal in 4-6 weeks, but the incisions may be red or dark for up 6-12 months, differing for each individual patient.

  • Dr Henry likes frequent follow-up appointments to monitor healing and address any concerns.
